Research students from Stawell university participated in research to learn about the properties of dark matter. In addition, it would become the first research centre in Australia and the southern hemisphere that would focus on the studies around dark matter properties. According to the lead researcher from the University of Melbourne, the research team contains the necessary information about the existence of dark matter. Moreover, the research team is confident in finding several unanswered mysteries around the dark matter. While Stage 1 of the research has been complete and in the coming months, the research experiment known as SABRE will be conducted to detect the position and properties of dark matter.
The SABRE south will also conduct collaborative research experiments with the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran team in Sasso, Italy. The purpose of this research is to detect Weakly Interactive Massive Particles (WIMP); specifically, they are considered one of the likely forms related to dark matter.
The Deputy Vice chancellor at the University of Melbourne, Professor James Mc Cluskey, says, "Working with our partners and sharing our collective knowledge and expertise, the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory will facilitate experiments which are critical in the global search for dark matter”.
Meanwhile, the Australian government provided $ 5 million in funding for the stairwell university research building. In addition, the Australian Research Council awarded a $35 million grant for designing a dedicated centre for Dark Matter research.
According to the Chairperson of Stanwell Research Laboratory, the SUPL, with these developments, will become an epicentre in regards to dark matter research-based studies.
