Stan Lee Documentary 'Final Chapter' Promises to Reveal the Comic Legend's 'Heartbreaking' Final Days

The "truly heartbreaking" conclusion to the life of Marvel comic book master Stan Lee is allegedly revealed in a recently released documentary. However, in order to release it, its creators must first secure funding.

Film producers are seeking $300,000 from a Kickstarter campaign to finish the project, "Stan Lee: The Final Chapter." The project aims to shed light on Lee's personal struggles, legal battles, and his lasting impact on the comic book industry.

Lee, the cultural icon who created many of the most well-known superheroes in comic books and motion pictures, died in November 2018 at the age of 95. According to a trailer for the unfinished movie, "The Final Chapter" will use "never-been-seen-footage" to describe the "scandal" surrounding Lee's last years and "how mistreatment, duplicity and conflict plagued" the adored inventor.

As per the Film:

According to the film, it will reveal who Lee's closest confidants were, "including several who exploited Lee's declining health and age, while profiting off his name and likeness."

According to the Kickstarter page, the campaign centers on Jon Bolerjack, a comic book artist, filmmaker, and Lee's assistant who became a "fixture of his inner circle" during production. The story "is ready to share" with Bolerjack.

According to the description of the Kickstarter campaign, "Jon gained unprecedented access and filmed everything he saw," "What he uncovered was a thriving market where Stan's signatures and memorabilia were converted into huge piles of cash and rival hucksters double-crossed each other to control Stan's fortune."

Jack Bolerjack "witnessed scandal and misconduct during his time by Lee's side up until his death, culminating in the struggle for control over Lee’s legacy and fortune (or lack thereof)," according to the press release, and the movie "is a story of betrayal, mistreatment and ultimately, redemption."

"Before his passing and as seen in the documentary, Lee gave Bolerjack his blessing to use the footage and create a film that could be shared with the world," according to the press release.

The turbulent final years of Stan Lee’s life came to public attention in 2018, when a Los Angeles court sided with lawyers representing Lee’s daughter, J.C. Lee, granting an elder abuse restraining order against Keya Morgan, Lee’s former manager. Morgan had been accused of exploiting Lee, prompting concerns about his well-being. The later years of the comic legend were filled with legal battles and failed financial ventures, which overshadowed his storied career. Abraham Riesman’s 2021 biography, “The Rise and Fall of Stan Lee” detailed these struggles. Riesman’s work delves into the complexities of Lee's life during his final years, exploring the impact of personal and professional challenges on his legacy. The combination of legal controversies and financial turmoil paints a heartbreaking picture of the comic icon's last chapter, offering a stark contrast to the superhero world he helped to create.

Stan Lee documentary release date: Is 'The Final Chapter' streaming?

No publication date has been set for "The Final Chapter."

"Hundreds of thousands of dollars of (their) own money putting together the documentary," said a press statement for the project, which Bolerjack and other producers have been working on for the past four years. The Kickstarter effort, which has raised about $38,000 two days into its 30-day window with a $300,000 goal, is needed to cover production costs and finish the film.
