Reporting Sensitive Crimes

Media research centre and University of Canberra researchers are developing guidelines that will support the media from Australia for reporting crimes related to child sexual abuse in such a way that victims feel empowered to report their crimes. Moreover, N&MRC have developed by the National Office of child safety for the development of evidence-related guidelines using which journalists can refer to while doing their reporting duties and thus serve as a guide for the engagement of victims of such crimes with social media.

The main purpose of this reporting is to raise awareness about these crimes and remove any stigma associated with them. In addition, the reporting guide would promote responsible reporting related to such crimes. Professor Macullum will analyse the reports from April 2020 to March 2022 as a part of the research.

According to the professor, taking into reference the past reporting guide would be developed to present an appropriate reporting guide. Moreover, the reporting guide would have been designed with a preference for minorities such as LGBTQ+ and Aboriginal communities. Besides, it is expected that the research team will develop the guide and send their suggestions and findings by mid-2023
