Monash University has received a $30 million charitable contribution, financing critical mental health research and preventative treatment programmes that will benefit millions of Australians. The extraordinary grant from the David Winston Turner Endowment Fund will boost research at Monash's Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health.
The Turner Institute is a world leader in research committed to the preventative brain and mental health research, treatment, and education. "This remarkable contribution will enable Monash to extend our universe studies into neurological and mental health and transfer this breakthrough work into prevention and therapeutic methods," Professor Gardner said.
Professor Gardner stated that the investment was in addition to the $13 million in prior gifts that enabled the University to build the Turner Institute, increasing the total contributed to Monash by the David Winston Turner Investment Fund to $43 million.
The Turner Institute's study of obsessive-compulsive disorder and addictions was made possible by an initial charitable grant of $5.25 million in 2015. Large-scale research initiatives, a postdoctoral fellowship, PhD scholarships, and the founding of the David Winston Turner Chair (held by Professor Murat Yücel) were all sponsored by this financing.
Professor Gardner stated, "We appreciate the David Winston Turner Investment Fund board for supporting these kind donations, enabling us to progress brain and cognitive health research and enhance outcomes for all Australians.
With this most recent donation, the Turner Institute will conduct a groundbreaking study to guide thousands of residents from all age categories in Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs for ten years. This will create a "living lab" for preventing, detecting, and treating the diseases that are being studied. Professor Kim Cornish Stated that COVID-19 had influenced us as people, parents, friends, spouses, and coworkers. Even though the effects won't be known, we must address them. This most recent donation is part of Monash University's relaunched charitable initiative, Change It. For Coming Generations, which has attracted support from over 45,000 contributors.
