The researchers are UNSW are developing safe and effective methods for biopsy tumours. Moreover, tumour treatment in itself is a very challenging aspect of medical science. Furthermore, the current procedures are very painful for patients. In addition, individuals living in rural regions don't have proper access to advanced medical facilities required for tumour treatment.
Associate professor Therese Becker from UNSW is leading research for liquid biopsy. In a liquid biopsy, the blood and relevant body fluids are extracted and using the genetic material, the tumours are detected. Besides, this method is expected to be more successful than the traditional solid biopsy method, where a part of the body is surgically removed for study. Dr John Lock researcher from UNSW, says that liquid biopsy will become the mainstream medical procedure for tumour detection in the future.
