Frequent anti-depressant consumption leads to high levels of antibiotic resistance.

Researchers from the University of Queensland have found that commonly prescribed antidepressants lead to an increase in the overall resistance of the body towards antibiotics. The research was led by UQ’s Professor Jianhua Guo, who works at the Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology at UQ.

To support the study, more than 40 million prescriptions for anti-depression-based medications were thoroughly studied. Accordingly, the most common anti-depression drugs included sertraline (Zoloft), escitalopram (Lexapro), bupropion (Welbutrin), duloxetine (Cymbalta) and agomelatine (Valdoxan).

In the meantime, more than 1 million individuals in Australia die on an annual basis due to the non-responsiveness of medications during infections. The findings of the study were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), which was funded by the UQ Foundation Research Excellence Awards and Australian Research Council Discovery Project,
