Children at northeastern Arnhem land-based Yirrkala School students are using an educational app to develop their overall literacy skills with the app that as presented by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies in Canberra. The Yäku ga Rirrakay app has become the default option for students who reside on the east coast of the Arnhem Land Gove Peninsula. Moreover, students are learning to develop their phonetic skills for Dhuwaya, which is a Yolnu Matha Language.

The app was developed by a team that University Professor of linguistics Jill Wigglesworth led. Besides, this app is special in providing training to children to understand their local language and enhance their vocabulary in their language. Professor Wigglesworth has closely worked with Dhuwaya speakers and educators in order to develop the language in an effective way.

In the meantime, the Yirrkala school has provided training regarding to bilingual language for more than 40 years for English and several Indigenous languages. Furthermore, language-based apps are there to teach English to Indigenous speakers. However, this app is specifically designed for Indigenous speakers to learn their local language. In future, it is expected that these languages will be developed into a digital platform to strengthen the overall literacy among the remote Indigenous communities.
