The research study led by Prof Guo and Dr Lu from the University of Queensland's Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology has found that microplastics have the ability to harbour microbial pathogens such as Viruses and E.Coli bacteria.
According to Dr Guo, the purpose of the research was to find out whether microplastics can carry viruses. Moreover, according to the research, it was found that viruses can travel using the medium of microplastics. Dr Lunhad used the E.coli bacteriophage for this research, as it is a microbe that resides in bacteria but it does not cause harm to humans.
Furthermore, the team also conducted a study on the exposure to the sun could promote the survival of the virus. In the first place, the study was conducted to study about the presence of covid 19 virus in wastewater. In the meantime, the study has been published in the Water Research Journal. While the research was funded by the Australian Research Council Discovery Project and the Advance Queensland Industry Research Fellowship.
